Manual Lymphatic Drainaige/Complete Decongestive Therapy

Manual lymph drainage is a highly specialised  treatment used in the treatment of lymphoedema and lipoedema.

Lymphoedema is caused by a build up of lymph fluid which causes swelling in a part of the body. It can develop if there are problems with the lymphatic system.

Lymph fluid can build up if any lymph drainage channels or lymph nodes are blocked or removed or damaged.

Some people with cancer develop lymphoedema because the cancer has caused changes in the lymphatic system. Or they may get lymphoedema due to treatments such as surgery or radiotherapy.

Lymphoedema most commonly affects the arms or legs. But it can develop in other body areas such as the:

  1. chest or back

  2. abdomen (tummy area)

  3. genitals

  4. head, neck or face

  5. breast

  6. armpit

  7. pelvic area

Lymphoedema can also occur at birth or after puberty, pregnancy  or menopause - this is called a primary lymphoedma.

This is a chronic long term condition which cannot be cured but it can usually be well controlled with MLD and compression.

Lipoedema is a chronic condition that occurs almost exclusively in women and manifests as symmetrical buildup of painful fat and swelling in the limbs, sparing the hands and feet.

Fat tissue expands primarily in the lower limbs, from buttocks to ankles, as well as in the arms, with weight loss strategies exhibiting limited effects on limb fat.  Lipoedema is further characterized by pain, tenderness upon contact, easy bruising, swelling (edema), and psychosocial issues that all impact a patient’s overall quality of life. Onset of lipoedema is reported to occur during puberty, however, it can occur or be exacerbated by periods of hormonal shifts, such as pregnancy or menopause, although data as to why are limited.  Weight gain and obesity are also considered to play a role in lipoedema onset and exacerbation of symptoms.

Reflexology

Reflexology  is the practice of applying precise hand and finger pressure to specific points on the feet to stimulate the body’s own healing system. These points are believed to correspond to specific organs and structures in the body.

Reflexology is a non-invasive, safe, and effective treatment. Since the feet and/or hands are the only areas being addressed, there is never any need for removal of clothing.  It is suitable for people who are undergoing medical treatments such as chemotherapy.

5 Oil Facial

Using natural oils and essential aromatherapy oils, specific acupressure points on the face are used to promote the production of collagen & elastin, improve muscle tone & skin tone and reduce blemishes. This is a luxury treatment and is incredibly relaxing.

Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words rei and ki, meaning universal live energy.   Reiki is an ancient laying-on of hands healing technique which uses the life force energy to heal, balancing the subtle energies within our bodies. Reiki addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances.

Holistic Massage

Today, changing attitudes in health care are taking us back in time to a more personalised form of health and healing.  Rather than viewing symptoms in isolation, we are starting to consider the condition of the whole person. The word ‘Holistic’ is from the Greek ‘Holos’ meaning, ‘whole’.  Viewed holistically, health is  seen as a balance of body, mind and spirit.  The difference between Holistic Massage and conventional Swedish massage is that Holistic Massage integrates newer ideas of holistic health with long established techniques of massage.

Seated Acupressure Massage/On site massage

Seated Acupressure Massage is a highly efficient and effective fifteen minute massage to a client who is clothed and seated.  It was developed in the USA by David Palmer in 1984.  He wanted a practical way to ease the tension of office workers, initially in Apple Computers.  It is designed to give maximum relaxation in the minimum amount of time making it ideal for almost any public daytime setting.  SAM is based on the Japanese system of Shiatsu, using pressure based techniques to access the soft tissue and the meridians contained within.
